Appel à contributions : The problematic text : classical editing in the 21st century

APA 146TH annual meeting January 8-11, 2015, New Orleans, LA
Date limite : 1er février 2014

Organizers:
Tom Keeline (Harvard University)
Justin Stover (All Souls College, Oxford)

E. R. Dodds once remarked that our classical texts were good enough to live with; D. R. Shackleton Bailey is said to have replied, “That depends on your standard of living.” That was some 50 years ago—what is the state of classical editing today? Textual criticism and editing have long been regarded as central to classical scholarship, but do they still have a place in the year 2015? How does traditional textual criticism overlap and interact with other established and emerging fields of classical studies, such as papyrology, reception studies, digital humanities, and literary theory? What possibilities for editing classical texts are provided by new technologies like computer-assisted recension, electronic text corpora, manuscript digitization, and digital editions? This panel seeks to showcase new work in textual scholarship that demonstrates the field’s ongoing importance to contemporary research in classics. Papers on Greek or Latin texts from Homer through the end of antiquity discussing new and recent editorial work, emendations, theoretical or practical problems of editing, the relationship between critical edition and commentary, prospects and possibilities for future editions, and the opportunities and challenges of editing in the digital age will all be welcome. Taken together, the papers presented will demonstrate the continued vitality and importance of textual scholarship in terms accessible to a general audience of classicists.
